How to Clean Install Windows 11 Without Losing Your Files

Sometimes a Windows install is beyond saving — years of cruft, broken updates, or malware that won’t fully die. A clean install wipes the slate and gives you the “new PC” feeling back. Done right, you won’t lose a single personal file. Here’s the full process.1. Back Up Everything First
Copy your Documents, Desktop, photos, and any license keys to an external drive or cloud storage. A clean install formats the drive — “keep my files” is not the same as a backup.
2. Create the Install USB
Download the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's site and make a bootable USB (8 GB+). This is also your recovery disk for the future — label it and keep it.
3. Note Your Drivers
Screenshot Device Manager or export your drivers (dism /online /export-driver). Windows 11 finds most drivers automatically, but Wi-Fi and chipset drivers are worth having offline.
4. Boot From USB and Install
Restart, enter the boot menu (F12/F8/Esc depending on maker), pick the USB, and follow the installer. Delete the old Windows partitions when asked — that’s what makes it “clean”.
5. Reconnect and Update
Once installed, run Windows Update fully before installing anything else. Then reinstall your drivers, starting with chipset and network.
6. Reinstall Apps Fresh
Don't restore from a system image — that defeats the purpose. Install apps one by one from fresh downloads. This is also the perfect moment to skip the bloat you never used.
7. Restore Your Files
Copy your backup back, then verify a few files open correctly before wiping the backup drive.
8. Set Up Maintenance
Enable System Restore, schedule monthly updates, and keep 15–20% of the drive free. After reinstalling your fan control tools, your machine will run cooler and quieter than it has in years.
